| Another Example of Checks and Balances in Action
The Situation
Our client is a leading distribution and design house for residential and commercial marble with locations in 4 major markets – Los Angeles, New York, Miami and Washington, DC. The company has grown to 95 employees, and has never had any human resources presence. All HR duties have been handled by an Office Manager, who has no HR training. All compensation decisions are made by the CEO, without regard to an overall compensation plan. The company has no written employment policies.
The Solution
Checks and Balances, Inc. conducted an onsite needs assessment, and identified several areas of immediate concern. We first addressed company compliance issues and revised their employee handbook and operational polices to match industry best practices. All 95 employees were re-verified for I-9 compliance within the first week, and key policies were written and distributed to all employees. A performance review process was instituted within the first 2 weeks, and all employee appraisals were reviewed by our HR Consultant for effectiveness and fairness across various departments. Managers received one-on-one coaching on effective appraisal presentation skills. Checks and Balances, Inc. met with the insurance broker on behalf of the client, and helped explain benefit options to the client that he had not previously understood.
Checks and Balances, Inc. employs an HR Admin at the client site one day per week to assist in maintaining the programs we have developed and implemented. Our HR Consultant is actively mentoring the incumbent Office Manager to be able to handle the HR duties going forward, and remains available for questions and advice on an hourly basis.
So, have you thought of someone who could use our help?
